Remembering Sichuan

(Chengdu, November 2005)

We are shocked and stunned at the damage and destruction caused by the earthquake in Sichuan. Our thoughts and prayers are with those people right now.

In 2005 we spent two weeks travelling through Sichuan, from Chengdu, through Songpan, Jiuzhaigou, Rouergai to Langmusi and beyond. We met a lot of wonderful people on our travels. We are right now thinking of the friends we met there in 2005 and we hope they are OK. Sun Yi Yi was our guide in Chengdu and Michael was our guide to the Panda Base. We also remember the Shepherds who invited us into their tent, and A-Sun who was our coffee shop host in Langmusi. We hope these people are all OK.

The roads in that part of the world are rugged. The roads we travelled on were in deep gorges next to high-cliff faces. One fairly large rock caused us to sit in traffic for more than an hour. We cannot even begin to imagine how difficult it must be to move through Sichuan now. Perhaps many roads are now non-existent and reaching the remote parts of the earthquake zone will be hard. Many of the people we saw there were poor and lived in what looked to us like self-constructed houses. We guess many of those have fallen down in the earthquake.

We were in Taiwan during the huge 921 earthquake in 1999 and remember the fear and panic each aftershock caused. The damage wrought by the Sichuan quake seems to be far worse and the rescuers are going to have their work cut out for them. We can only hope that these people will receive all the support they need and that supplies such as food and water will reach them.

Our prayers are with them.

  2. Hi Paul,

This is Diane from Grace Baptist CHurch. How are you doing?

Yes, I have wanted to write to you about the earthquake in Sichuan because I remember you traveled there a while ago. I even can vividly remember your travel log letters back then describing to us those magnificent mountains, scenary and lovely pandas(didn't you and Queenie get to hold one or two of them?). So I think you must be shocked at the news.

I feel disturbed as well at what happened in China right now. News reports say that some river dams in that region have shown cracks. Their structures are damaged to a certain(dangerous, I am afraid) degree. If they break down, I can't imagine.. Let's pray for them.

You take care too... I like your blog a lot.

    Diane
