Normally we only post stories about events of our life here on durbanbay.com but what the heck, time for a small change. I was incredibly amused to read on the Mail and Guardian today that the South African Home Affairs Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula said: "Tightening border controls is the "worst" thing South Africa could do to curb illegal immigration." The "honorable" minister continues saying "Tighter border controls would 'actually encourage illegal migration'"
So why am I amused? You see I was born in South Africa but for convenience travel on a British passport. Three years ago when we were leaving South Africa after a three week visit I was told at the airport I couldn't leave because I had a British passport and not South African. Somewhere in their convoluted heads they passed legislation requiring all people born in South Africa to travel in and out of South Africa on South African passports. Anyway, I had to go through the long and unpleasant process of applying for a South African passport in case I decide to return to visit anytime soon.
So you see why this is mad! They make it difficult for South African citizens travelling on legitimate foreign passports to enter the country, but all those illegals, no sweat. Let them in!
So drop all border controls to make all potential illegals "feel" better, and then they won't want to try and sneak over anymore.
ReplyDeleteTell those with passports to go away for inconveniencing the border control people.
And next time just walk around border control, probably easy enough at Jo'burg.
